Think Private School Means Fewer Athletic Opportunities? Think Again. Explore Volleyball, Basketball & Track at The Banff School

Athletics can play an important role in a student’s high school experience. For many families, choosing the right school also means finding a place where their teen can compete, develop their skills and be part of a team.

Some parents assume that private school means fewer athletic opportunities. At The Banff School, students compete through full sports seasons while building confidence, discipline and a strong sense of teamwork.

Competitive Athletics at Banff

The Banff School Athletics Department offers Junior Varsity and Varsity teams in volleyball, basketball and track and field. The Banff Bears compete at the local, district, regional and state levels, giving student-athletes the opportunity to experience meaningful competition throughout the season.

Banff teams have won nine state championships since 2020, along with multiple state appearances and runner-up finishes. These achievements reflect the commitment of the athletes, coaches and school community.

Teams are led by dedicated members of the Banff athletics staff. Practices are held after school, primarily in the school’s fully equipped gymnasium, with practices or games typically scheduled four to five days each week.

Room to Participate and Improve

Participation and development are central to Banff athletics. Students in grades 5 through 12 have the opportunity to join the after-school sports program, regardless of previous experience. Each season begins with a trial period, allowing students to explore the sport and learn what being part of the team involves.

Experienced athletes can continue strengthening their abilities in a competitive environment. Students who are newer to a sport have the chance to learn, improve and discover their potential. Many Upper School students participate in at least one sport, with many competing in two or more throughout the year. New sports are also added as the program continues to grow.

Skills That Reach Beyond the Game

Athletics give students the chance to develop skills that support them in the classroom and in everyday life. Through practices and competition, Banff athletes learn how to communicate, manage their time, respond to challenges and stay committed to a goal. They also learn the importance of sportsmanship and supporting the people around them. Every player has a role in the team’s success. That responsibility helps students grow as athletes while building confidence in what they can contribute.

Become Part of the Banff Bears

Private school does not have to mean stepping away from competitive athletics. At Banff, students can participate in full seasons, receive dedicated coaching and compete at multiple levels while becoming an important part of their team.
